Kakheti

November 4, 2014

Until then, "Alazani Valley" mostly made me think of cheap corner-store wine. It turns out it really is a valley, and an incredibly picturesque one at that. And besides, it is wonderful Georgian wine.

Kakheti is a region and historical province in eastern Georgia, in the upper reaches of the Iori and Alazani rivers. Kakheti is famous for wine. That is exactly why it ended up on our itinerary.

We went into some cafe with a "Wine Tasting" sign. Did not like it - expensive, and not very clear what was what.

Later, we spent a whole day on a tour of wineries. The tour included several tastings. Those tastings were exactly as they should be. We bought wine at those wineries to take home.

In Sighnaghi we stayed at a wonderful guesthouse.

David, the owner of the guesthouse, treats us to grape juice.
